I worked in a hospital in San Diego that had 10,000 beds, and ships full of patients arrived, unloading long, long lines of casualties. After that I worked in Corona, California, where we had twelve wards of tuberculosis patients. In the South Pacific, tropical diseases were so common that the warning signs of TB went unnoticed. After the war I stayed in the navy and became a flight nurse. When I first graduated from nurses' training in Rochester, Minnesota, I joined the navy because it offered more security than civilian nursing.
Nurses are trained to be selfless and not to despair. During interviews it became clear they didn't "talk shop" with each other in order to avoid becoming emotional at the expense of the patient. Morale of the overseas nurses was high when the patient loads were heaviest, and complaints of being overworked were never heard. "I hope your book won't be morbid," a nurse said as we parted. '' In this book, their lighthearted attitudes prevail because the memories of camaraderie and sisterhood during wartime are strong, even after fifty years.
All day and into the evening I went from one patient to the next without sitting down or having a cup of coffee. Someone brought fried chicken in but few of us felt hungry, as we had seen too much death and were involved with the most serious wounds and bravest of men. Patients had arms and legs amputated, severe chest and spinal wounds, abdominal and cranial wounds. Many wanted to go out and fight back. Some wanted a prayer said or to hear the 23rd Psalm, and we obliged them along with the surgical procedures.
