It coexisted with, and was succeeded by, the Hopewell Culture. C. D. 700; it was most highly developed in the eastern Ohio River valley. The Hopewell civilization was supplanted by the Mississippian, or Mound Builders, Culture. D. 800 to 1400 in the Mississippi watershed and areas north of the Gulf of Mexico. At certain ceremonial centers, they constructed large urban communities around huge earthworks, burial complexes, and temple mounds. The greatest expression of the Mound Builders’ civilization was their city at Cahokia, Illinois, which extended 6 miles, contained eighty-five burial or religious mounds (including one temple that rose 100 feet off a base of 16 acres), and may have held up to 75,000 people.
