There’s no quick fix. It’s slow and gradual… You cannot dictate when people want to talk. Indie Larma Beccy talked at length about how workers had talked to her in a patronising way and that certain phrases were used frequently; for example: ‘There’s nothing you can tell me that I haven’t heard before, so I won’t be shocked’ or ‘I know how you feel’.
Education about their mental health problems, letting them educate us about their view of their difficulties. True care, empathy, warmth. In all ways we can show care. Giving people enough time, and at a time they need it, not when we want to give it. Having fun is good for everyone’s mental health and is an important way of sharing in other people’s lives.
