There was no one Rome provincials sought to emulate, and there was no agenda to make them do so. Rome was constantly changing. It represented widely different things to different people. For some it was a living, breathing city, to others an imperial abstraction, but it was never a static blueprint for life. The artefacts associated with imperial hegemony over the provinces often differed from place to place, and in many cases even from those to be found in Rome itself. 89 Some studies of the auxilia have nonetheless fought a rearguard action in the Romanization debate.

See p. 202. 93 Mann (1954: 506), referring here specifically to Egyptian legionaries; nevertheless the logic applies with equal force to the impact of military service on auxiliaries.

Wheeler (1996). 46 James (1999: 15, 18) citing Anderson (1991). 12 Blood of the Provinces Yet, as James has demonstrated, there is another level of complexity to embrace. For despite the absence of evidence for dress regulations and systematic imperial prescriptions on military equipment, there was a remarkable similarity in what soldiers wore from one end of the Empire to the other.
