Here fantasy may be thought to exist in the non-experiential realm of implicit memory and belief in the mental contents generated by this procedure, normally activated in the context of an object relationship (for us the transference). This resistance, however, is not the residue of the original affective charge marshalled to keep the fantasy or experience from being represented in autobiographical memory.
Her argument was radical, claiming that it is just not sufficient to look for missing aspects of the patient in his repressed and buried unconscious as these missing parts may lie further afield, often in someone else's feeling. More recently, in the light of new models of memory in cognitive science, we have reconsidered which aspects of the memory system underpinning mental representations are likely to generate therapeutic change (Fonagy and Target, 1997). Thus, she reminds us that projective identification does not inevitably affect the analyst's countertransference, and that projective identification can be into an internal as well as an external object (Alvarez, 1999). On the other hand, I think Alvarez occasionally understates how large a role the analyst plays as a person in the external world in her own work.
