Realising that any bid for civil rights would inevitably become linked to the question of national rights, they had sent a delegation to Dublin to ask the IRA if it could provide protection in the event of an armed knee-jerk by the state. During July and early August 1969, as the rioting gradually increased in Belfast, and nationalist areas came under sporadic loyalist fire, community leaders had again approached the Belfast IRA, most of them old veterans of earlier days, for protection.
Meanwhile, a constant barrage of vindictive propaganda had become the acceptable response of a society intent on considering the people of Ballymurphy as rightly occupying the bottom rungs of the social ladder. The problems of isolation, poverty, money-lending, unemployment and poor housing that now bedevilled the place were recreated so that guilt was shifted from those who caused the problems to those who were their victims.
